This mission includes identifying, supporting, and advocating on legislative issues that impact US exporters — particularly small to medium-sized exporters. By doing so, the DEC seeks to improve the U.S. global competitive position, and offer private sector input to the Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration and the U.S. Commercial Service. These issues include international trade agreements and federal government exporter assistance programs, such as US&FCS Gold Key program and U.S. Export-Import Bank’s export financing programs.
The DEC also helps to identify foreign trade barriers that hinder U.S. exports, and U.S. legislative and regulatory policies that disincentivize exporting. It also works with Regional Legislative Coordinators who cover the legislative affairs in the eight regional District Export Council networks.
